Shoals Chamber of Commerce- Reality Check
When: Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Needed at least for 2 - 3 hours at a time.
Where: Florence Middle School Gymnasium, 648 N. Cherry St., Florence, AL 35630
What: Reality Check is a fun, financial education program for youth, simulating life at age 25. Each participant chooses a career & is given a simulated family situation & given a monthly salary relative to their career. Each must visit all the booths, staffed by VOLUNTEERS (auto dealer, realtor, grocery store, utilities, child care, "life happens," clothing, insurance, "just for fun," bank & charity) and makes decisions about how they will spend their money. Volunteers staff the booths and help the students make their buying decisions, using a list of options. This exercise is a great eye-opener for the kids, who think that once they get our on their own, they can do and have and buy anything they want, anytime. This shows them that their efforts in education are directly connected to their career opportunities, which are connected to their quality of life. It's a TON of FUN for VOLUNTEERS as well as the kids. We will feed any volunteers at the event during lunch time and will have snacks available all day.
