What: The first week of November will be the week of our annual Toys for Tots registration. They need at least one volunteer and one staff member to operate the registration table at all times. They have the shifts broken up into 2 hour shifts, but volunteers can work several shifts if they would prefer. They will provide the volunteers with a United Way t-shirt, but you will need to pick up the t-shirt from the office (118 E Mobile St, Suite 300) before your designated shift.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Shoals
What: Our agency is looking for positive role models to be matched with children in our community. The volunteer (Big Brother or Big Sister) must be 19 years of age and able to commit to 1 year with the program. They will also be required to meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister for approximately 4-10 hours a month. One hour a week. The volunteer will be screened by application with references and a criminal background check. This is for the safety of the children. This is a very rewarding experience for the Bigs and the Littles.

Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing & Rehab Center

What: Need 10-20 volunteers to interact with the residents at the center. The residents truly enjoy the interaction with the students. Students could sing, play piano, or do activities with the residents.

Shoals Crisis Center: Rape Response

What: The Shoals Crisis Center needs 15 volunteers to do various tasks such as:
Crisis Line Volunteer:
• Attend a 20-hour victim services training.
• Take calendar time as able each month.
• Respond to crisis calls and hospital calls when scheduled.
• Fill out paperwork and deliver forms to office.
• Attend volunteer in-service trainings.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Assist at community health fairs,
university events, sponsored events, etc.
• Present programs to school and community audiences.
• Attend periodic volunteer in-service trainings.
• Assist with copies, victim packets,
and any other offices duties.

St. Vincent de Paul Society/ Thrift Store

What: The St. Vincent de Paul Society is requesting volunteers to help work at the thrift store. The greatest need for volunteers is on Saturday from 10:00am-2:00pm. The work would include receiving, sorting and displaying items received in the store. Also, there could possibly be some cleaning periodically. Volunteers are mainly needed monthly, or every other month. The store manager, Jolene Perry will coordinate and keep track of your time.

What: Needs 10 volunteers to staff our seven camp sessions during May-August 2015. Camp Smile-A-Mile serves the entire family.There are two family camp sessions, one for only siblings and four for patients. There is an application process opened from January to March that includes an application, background check and interview. In order to volunteer you must be 19 years of age or 21 to work with teens. As a counselor at Camp Smile-A-Mile you would be assigned 1-3 campers and would participate in all activities with them during the session.

What: They have several volunteer opportunities from after school to monthly activities that involve special needs children and adults. The volunteers will be required to participate in training specific to the volunteer activities which can vary. They need 5-25 volunteers!

What: Keller Hospice provides physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of patients during the final stages of their lives. Volunteers are a very important part of Keller Hospice. They are looking for volunteers to visit patients and their families to provide companionship or to provide respite care for the caregiver. They need at least two volunteers!
